Having a Successful Medical Billing Process
No matter which part of the medical field you are in, if you see patients, chances are you have a medical billing process that could use a
little work.
Most medical offices know their business. They do the work well, take care of their patients, and even know how to bill things to the
insurance companies.
But, over time, the medical practice will grow, there will be more and more patients, more invoices, and more claims that need to go to the
medical insurance companies.
Each of these claims is filled with codes, numbers and comments that have to be in perfect order, or else the claim may be shipped back to the
office for correction. The workload alone is going to leave plenty of room for mistakes. This is even compounded when the person running the
medical billing process is also regularly dealing with customers, and getting interrupted in the midst of the delicate process.
So, how do you fix the problem? You want a successful medical practice, and if you have one, you should be happy. But maybe the answer to the
problem is to send the medical billing process to an outside vendor.
Why not have your office focus on what they are best at, taking care of your customers, and let the medical billing vendor take care of the
precision paperwork that has to go to the insurance companies so you can get paid.
When selecting a medical billing company, you should keep a number of things in mind.
First, know what they can do and what you need. Different companies have different needs from medical billing. Look for a company that knows
your specific area of the medical industry. The more they know about your type of practice, the more likely they are to be able to handle your
billing and sort out any problems that may come up.
How much follow up do they offer? Even with paperwork done correctly, not every insurance claim is going to go through perfectly every time.
What is the company's policy about dealing with follow up to billings?
Are they set up to hand patients who have more than one insurance policy and need secondary submission to cover more of their expenses?
How will they keep you informed of their work? Learn about their reporting system so you can keep an eye on what is being done, how it's being
done, and the success rate of the billings.
Finally, ask for recommendations. There should be plenty of other offices using a medical billing company. See if you can find a few of these
companies and what they think about working with them. An even better way to do this is to talk to your local colleagues and ask them what
company they use and if they would recommend that company for your usage. You are more likely to get an honest answer from someone you know.
The best way to make a successful medical office even more successful is to focus on what you do best and outsource the other work. In the
case of the medical billing process, find a company that knows your industry, and how to work within it, and let them take this tough job off you
hands so you can focus on the patients.
